Musical Comedy Society Auditions - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Musical Comedy Society will be holding auditions for their 2015 production "The Pyjama Game" (which will be held in August) at the SBMC's shed at the rear of the South Burnett Enterprise Centre at 6 Cornish Street, Kingaroy this afternoon. Auditions for men will be held from 2:00pm to 3:30pm, and for women from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. Clean Up Australia Day
Today is Clean Up Australia Day, the one day every year when all Australians are encouraged to put in a few hours helping to clean up a local eyesore (a park, a stretch of road etc) by removing litter and rubbish. You can register a clean-up event in your part of the South Burnett (or find one) by going to the official Clean Up Australia Day website. In Nanango the Nanango Tourism and Development Association will be marking the day with a quarterly clean-up of their "Adopt-A-Spot" - the stretch of the D'Aguilar Highway from Brown Street to the Tarong turn-off - from 8:30am until around 12:00 noon this morning. New helpers are always welcome! And in Murgon, Cr Kathy Duff will be leading a clean-up of the lily ponds area near the CBD. Most of the work will be on the water’s edge, but some will also be undertaken in a boat. The clean-up will start at 8:00am and go for a few hours, depending on how many helpers turn up. In Kingaroy, the Girl Guides are conducting a clean-up of the Pound Street community gardens behind the duck ponds and Senior Citizens Centre near the CBD from 8:30am to around noon this moning. Volunteers are very welcome! There'll also be a clean-up of Memorial Park between 8:00am and 11:00am run by a separate group, and if you'd like to be part of that you should meet at the McDonald's car park at 8:00am. Finally - near Wondai - Arethusa College will be running a clean-up of Ficks Crossing between 10:30am and around 1:30pm if you'd like to get involved there.

Nanango Men's Shed

The fourth week of the Blackbutt-Yarraman Rugby League Club's touch football competition will get underway tonight at the Blackbutt rugby league grounds (ie Ian “Bunny” Pearce Oval), with Juniors (aged 5-14 years) kicking off at 5:00pm followed by Opens (men's, women's and mixed teams) at 6:00pm. This is a six-a-side competition and it will run on Monday nights for the next two weeks. Cost is $5 per person per game, and food and drinks will be available at the ground.

The dinner is an initiative of the Kingaroy District Ministry Association and is for the benefit of anyone who's hungry or otherwise doing it tough. Free Multiple Sclerosis Information Session - Kingaroy
MS Queensland will be holding two completely free, identical information sessions in Kingaroy today for people suffering from MS (Multiple Sclerosis), their family and friends. The sessions will be held in the Taabinga Room at the DAFF facility at 214 Kingaroy-Cooyar Road south of Kingaroy. The first session will run from 10:00am to 12:30pm, and the second from 1:00pm to 3:30pm. Both sessions will be facilitated by Tim O'Maley, who'll provide an overview of MS, an update on current research and treatment and how to understand complex symptoms. He'll be followed by psychologist Aart Simons, who'll discuss the psychological impacts of MS; senior physiotherapist Joy Constantine, who'll talk about MS and exercise; and regional services coordinator Tasman Saywell, who'll talk about MS Queensland's services and support. 19th Annual Yarraman Horse Ride
The Yarraman Agricultural Society's 19th Annual Yarraman Horse Ride will be held in and around Yarraman today. The Ride is the second-biggest in the region (the other is the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride) and this year's event will feature two trails around the Yarraman district: a 20km ride and a 30km ride. The rides will leave the Showgrounds around 7:30am and return at around 4:45pm. In the evening, and they'll be followed by a programme of live entertainment which will run from 7:00pm until around midnight, along with meals and a bar. Admission to the Ride is $20 (which includes the evening entertainment programme) and there'll be overnight camping facilities and hot showers available at the Showgrounds too, including a burger dinner on Friday night; breakfast and dinner on Saturday; and a recovery breakfast on Sunday morning. 57th Annual Proston Show
The 57th annual Proston Show will be held at Proston Showgrounds on the Proston-Boondooma Road just west of town from 8:00am this morning through until around 10:00pm tonight. The Proston Show is always a big event in the western South Burnett and beef cattle will be a particular focus today because Rockhampton isn't far away, Today's activities will get underway with horse-riding events, stud cattle judging and competitions for junior judges and young handlers shortly after the gates open. This will be followed a Championship Dog Show kicking off at around 8:30am; and then with show jumping, poultry judging and prime trade cattle judging at 9:00am. Then at 9:30am there'll be wood-chopping and post-ripping, including the famous Proston Post-Ripping Challenge that's always fun to see. This will be followed at 11:00am with the presentation of the Prime Trade Show Awards, and then the Proston Stockman's Classic at noon. The official opening and Miss Showgirl presentation will be held at 1:30pm and this will be followed by the Grand Parade at 2:00pm along with more award presentations, including Stud Beef Grand Champion. Other great things to look out for at this year's Show include Viv and Maurie's Shearing Shed with bottle-feeding of lambs; pavilion displays; sideshow rides; clown shows; and a Whip-Cracking Competition and demos at 4:00pm. In the evening there'll also be live entertainment provided by DJ Hams (including open karaoke from 7:00pm) and up and coming country soloist Bridget O'Shannessy, plus a Giant Fireworks Show at 7:00pm. The fifteenth round of the South Burnett's A Grade cricket competition will be played in Nanango and Murgon today. It's the last A grade round before the semi-finals (which will be held next week), so teams will be particularly keen to score a win. Art Exhibition Opening - Kingaroy
After being closed for renovations during February, the Kingaroy Art Gallery in Haly Street (opposite the peanut silos) will be opening their March exhibition with a wine and cheese tasting at 10:30am this morning. This month the gallery will be featuring "Tole'd by Paper" by well-known Kingaroy paper tole artist Rosemarie Matthews-Frederick in the main gallery, along with some works executed by her students. And in Gallery 2, it will be showcasing "Unclaimed and Unknown Art", a quirky exhibition of artworks that were recently "rediscovered" during a clean-up of the Gallery's stockroom. Meanwhile, Gallery 3 will be providing information about the "Dual Arts: Art Versus Photography" project currently being undertaken in the region by artist Lee Porter and photographer Sherrianne Talon, along with forms which will allow visitors to nominate iconic South Burnett sites they'd like to see included in this unique venture. The 15th annual Maidenwell Folk Gathering will get underway around 6:00pm this evening at the Maidenwell Hotel in Maidenwell, starting a weekend-long party that won't conclude until Sunday evening, March 15. The Folk Gathering is a pure folk music event (ie fully acoustic - no electrics are allowed) and because of this has built up a very loyal following over the years. Last year the Gathering attracted in excess of 200 people with virtually zero publicity and organisers are hoping for an even bigger crowd this year. The Charlotte The Emu Memorial Committee and CROW-FM 90.7 will be holding an on-air auction on The Brekky Show between 6:00am and 9:00am this morning to help raise the final funds the committee needs to erect a permanent steel sculpture memorial to Wondai's beloved (and now departed) town emu. South Burnett Rugby League is starting to gear up ahead of the start of the main competition, and a series of pre-season games will be played at Nanango’s Fred Kassulke Oval today. 2015 Wine & Food In The Park Festival


The 16th annual Wine & Food In The Park Festival will be held at Memorial Park in Haly Street, Kingaroy from 12:00 noon this morning through to 8:00pm tonight. The Festival has steadily grown over the years the biggest single festival held in the South Burnett as well as the region's most loved Autumn get-together, and this year's WAFITP promises to be bigger and better than ever. This year the Festival will feature all its regular attractions (such as the Giant Wine Tent, exotic Food Court, wet bar and a jam-packed program of live entertainment) along with several new things including an on-grounds Dinner Under The Stars (held last night); craft beers; several Central Burnett wineries alongside well-known local faces; and beer tent entertainment in addition to the main stage acts. The Festival's popular - and usually outrageous! - street performers will also be wending their way through the crowds all day, and there'll also be carnival rides for children on the grounds too. Admission is just $15 per head for adults (and under-18s can get in for free!). And after the Festival winds down most local entertainment venues in Kingaroy will be holding post-WAFITP parties for revellers who want to carry on into the night. 2015 Murgon Show
The gates will open at Murgon Showgrounds in Macalister Street, Murgon at 6:30am this morning for the second (and main) day of the 91st Annual Murgon Show. This year's Show will feature a very big range of cattle and horse events and things will move into full gear from 8:00am onwards with judging for stud cattle; led steers; prime cattle and poultry. There'll also be horse events for hacks, ponies and led horses in the main arena, along with a giant Dog Show (more than 400 entries); a bumper Sideshow Alley; pavilion and trade exhibits; and all the fun of a great Aussie fair. This year's Murgon Show will be officially opened at around 2:00pm in front of the grandstand, and there'll also be a spectacular fireworks display mid-way through the evening at around 7:30pm. Other things to look out for this year include Mal The Magician; the Target Fashion Parade; whip-cracking displays; Rodeo Reptiles; Col Noble; a Ute Show; Miss Showgirl and Miss Junior Showgirl; and a special "100 Years Of Anzac" school display. Saturday Cricket
There's a big day of cricket coming up in the South Burnett today. In the A Grade competition, today's semi-final match at the Wondai cricket grounds between the Wondai Wolves and Kingaroy's RSL Services should be a nail-biter. Both teams are in fine form and the winner is anybody's guess - but whoever it is, they'll be facing off against Murgon in the season final at the Murgon Sportsgrounds next week in a bumper cricketing reunion day being planned by the Murgon Cricket Club. And in the B Grade Final that's being played at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy, the indomitable Kumbia Rattlers will be playing against the indefatigable Warriors for 2014-15 season honours. Again, the winner is anybody's guess - but spectators and supporters are very welcome at all games, and you should see some excellent cricket.

5th Annual Windera Music Muster
Windera State School P&C will be holding their fifth annual Windera Music Muster at the school's leafy grounds on the Murgon-Gayndah Road from 3:00pm until around 12:00 midnight tonight. Public Meeting - Blackbutt
The South Burnett Regional Council will be holding a public meeting at the Blackbutt Comunity Hall in Coulson Street, Blackbutt at 6:30pm this evening to advise residents about progress on the SBRC's plan to get a modern suipermarket built in the town. Blackbutt is the only major South Burnett town which doesn't have a supermarket, and the SBRC recently called for expressions of interest from developers to build one. The meeting will also inform residents about kerbing and drainage work that the Council will soon be undertaking in the town, and try to gauge the community's views about erecting a statue in honour of international tennis star Roy Emerson, who grew up in Blackbutt. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $35 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items). March For Mental Health
A region-wide "March For Mental Health" will be held around the South Burnett this morning, followed by a free music concert and family entertainment in the Town Hall Forecourt in Glendon Street, Kingaroy. The event is an awareness raiser designed to send a message that the South Burnett needs better mental health support facilities, and it will kick off with walks at Errol Munt Park near the Blackbutt Visitor Information Centre in Blackbutt and the Murgon RSL Club car park at 9:00am; followed by two further walks at Reg McCallum Park in Henry Street, Nanango and the Wondai Timber Industry Museum at Wondai at 10:15am. Both groups will then converge on Kingaroy, where the concert will kick off at 12:00 noon with performances by Amber Goldsmith, Tori Summers, Cruise 'N' Groove and Ausphonic that will run until around 3:00pm. There'll also be a free jumping castle for children and food and drink stalls in the grounds. The second round of the South Burnett's Evolution Solar Football League for 2015 will be played in Wondai and Kingaroy this afternoon. The latest round of the South Burnett's pre-season rugby league games will be held at Jack O'Chin Oval in Cherbourg today, kicking off at 9:00am with an U6s/U8s match between Cherbourg and Murgon. This will be followed at 10:15am with an U10s Nanango v Wondai match; and then at 10:50am with another U10s match: Cherbourg v Murgon. At 11:25am there'll be a string of three U12s matches: Kingaroy v Nanango; then Murgon v Wondai; and then Cherbourg v Combined. And at 1:40pm, there'll be an U14s match between Kingaroy and Wondai, followed at 2:25pm by an U18s clash between Cherbourg and Kingaroy/Murgon.
