New Year's Day Lunch - Wondai
Dimities Cottage at 49 Haly Street in Wondai will be running an all-you-can-eat New Years Day Buffet Lunch from 11:30am to 2:30pm today. Tickets are $35 per head and bookings are essential: (07) 4168-5744.

Yarraman New Year's Day Festival
Yarraman will be ringing in the New Year with a four-hour News Years Day Festival at the Yarraman Recreation Grounds off the New England Highway just west of the CBD from 5:00pm until 9:00pm this evening. The Festival will feature lots of great family fun including live music; market stalls; a licensed bar; hot food and beverages; and a range of inexpensive amusement rides for children including jumping castles, a slide, a climbing rock wall and dodgem cars (rides are $3 each, 5 for $12 or $20 for an unlimited rides armband). Fire-fighting superhero Blazer The Bear will be putting in an appearance at 6:00pm and there'll also be a big fireworks display around 8:00pm. The Festival is run by the Yarraman Progress Association and co-sponsored by Toowoomba Regional Council. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

New Year's Day Public Holiday
Today is New Years Day, a public holiday, and most South Burnett businesses will either be closed today or operating on restricted hours.

SBRC Council Offices Re-Open
The South Burnett Regional Council's offices and Customer Service Centres will reopen for business at 8:30am today after their annual festive season break.

Tom Curtain Katherine Outback Experience Show - Kumbia
Multiple Golden Guitar winner and horseman extraordinaire Tom Curtain will be returning to his old home town tonight to perform his Katherine Outback Experience Show of real horse training and working dog demonstrations, followed by a live music concert. Tom's show will be run at the Kumbia race course off Bell Street from 6:00pm to 8:30pm (gates open at 5:30pm). Food and drinks will be available onsite (no BYO) and a cash bar will be operating. Guests should wear appropriate clothing for an outdoor event and BYO chairs and/or picnic blankets. Tickets are $30 for adults or $15 for students aged 6-17 (under-6s are free). They can be booked in advance from Eventbrite or obtained at the gate tonight.

Town Hall Bingo - Murgon
Bingo games will be played at the Murgon Town Hall in Gore Street, Murgon this morning. Doors open at 8:30am and eyes go down at 10:00am, with more than $1000 in prizes on offer. Everyone is welcome.

Friday Croquet - Kingaroy

Nanango Country Markets
The Nanango Show Society will be holding their regular monthly Country Markets at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 6:00am to around 12:00 noon today. As usual, the markets will feature a wide variety of craft stalls, new and used goods, plants, poultry and pets. The Nanango Markets are the largest rural market in south east Queensland and attract up to 420 stallholders. But new stallholders are always very welcome too! More info? Public Meeting - Proston
A public meeting to discuss the possible future extension of the South Burnett Rail Trail from Murgon to Proston will be held at the Proston Community Hall in Rodney Street at 6:30pm tonight. A necessary first step in any trail extension along the former Murgon-Proston railway route would be to conduct a feasibility study into the project, and the South Burnett Regional Council is eligible for 100% State Government funding for this if it chooses to take up the option. Tonight's meeting will hear speakers from the South Burnett Rail Trail Users Association, the Coverty Creek Community Development Association and residents from Proston, Hivesville and Murgon who have an interest in this project. There'll also be a sausage sizzle run by the Proston Men's Shed and tea, coffee and cakes supplied by Proston QCWA available for purchase. Everyone is welcome!

South Burnett Pantry - Kingaroy
After a brief break for the festive season, the South Burnett Pantry will be open from 8:30am to 12:30pm today at 22 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $40 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items). The South Burnett Race Club will be holding its new Wondai Summer Race Meeting at the Wondai race track in Baynes Street, Wondai from around 11:30am today. The fashion theme of the meeting is "Summer Safari" and guests are encouraged to dress to it to be in the running for great prizes in the Fashions Of The Field competition. Old Time Dancing Classes

The class caters to all levels from beginners to advanced, all in a fun and social atmosphere lead by a qualified dance instructor. The first day of the three-day Kings Royal, the biggest annual event on the South Burnett Speedway calendar, will be held at Kingaroy Showgrounds tonight. Racing will get underway at 5:00pm and this year more than 78 drivers - including 12 former national champions - have nominated. Tonight's program will feature the first round of the IBRP Kings Royal Modified Sedans, along with Street Stocks and Production Sedans. Admission is $25 for adults, $15 for students (with ID) and aged or disability pensioners and $65 for a family of two adults and up to three students (children 12 and under are free). Today is Australia Day, a national public holiday. Australia Day marks the date in 1788 when Captain Arthur Philip raised the British flag at Port Jackson near the present-day site of Sydney and became Governor of the new British colony of New South Wales. A special Pink Stumps Cricket Morning will be held at the Hivesville Sports Grounds from 9:00am to around 12:00 noon this morning in conjunction with the Hivesville Markets (see entry further above) to help raise funds for the McGrath Foundation, which places McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia and helps increase breast cancer awareness in young Australian women.
