New Year's Day Carnival - Yarraman
The Yarraman Progress Association will be holding a New Year’s Day Carnival at Errol Munt Park on the New England Highway just west of Yarraman's CBD from 4:00pm to 10:00pm today. The Carnival is a replacement for the town's 2014 Christmas Carnival - which had to be cancelled at short notice due to wet weather - and will feature most of the Christmas Carnival's attractions (except Santa). These include food and drink stands, market stalls, live entertainment and a great fireworks display at around 8:00pm. Admission is free and everyone is welcome!

New Year's Day
Today is New Years Day, a public holiday. Most South Burnett businesses will either be closed today or operating on restricted hours. Today also marks the start of the United Nations' International Year of Light and the International Year of Soils (ie two separate things); the second month of summer in the southern hemisphere; the start of the South Burnett's 2014-15 vintage which will begin a little later this month when the first white grapes are harvested; and the final weeks of the summer school vacation (classes will resume on Tuesday, January 27). South Burnett Online will resume normal broadcasting on Monday, January 19. We wish all our readers a very Happy New Year!

The South Burnett Speedway will be roaring into life at the Kingaroy Showgrounds in Youngman Street, Kingaroy at 3:00pm this afternoon with the first day of the Speedway's bumper two day meeting to welcome in the new year. Racing at tonight's meeting will get underway at 5:00pm and will feature Modified Sedans and Street Stocks. Racing at tonight's meeting will get underway at 5:00pm and will feature AMCA's; Proddies and Juniors; and 4 Cylinders. Normal Council Services Resume
All of the South Burnett Regional Council's services - including libraries and Customer Service Centres - will resume normal operations from 8:30am this morning after their annual Feastive Season break. Most South Burnett retail businesses will also return to normal operations today. South Burnett Online will return to normal broadcasting on Monday, January 19.

The Wondai District Cricket Club will be holding their annual Pink Stumps Golf Day at the Wondai Country Club on the Bunya Highway just north of Wondai's CBD today. Last Man Standing Bowls Competition - Murgon
The Murgon Bowls Club in Macalister Street, Murgon will be holding a "Last Man Standing" knockout bowls competition at 5:30pm this evening. This fun event is for teams of four players, who take to the green with two bowls each and try to get their two bowls as close to the kitty as possible. At the end of each round, the bowl furthest from the kitty is removed from play, and this elimination process continues until there’s only one bowler left (who is “The Last Man Standing”). Meanwhile, in the tenth round of this year's B Grade competition, Warriors will play the Kumbia Rattlers in Kingaroy; and Barambah will play RSL Services while the Murgon Colts play the Murgon Diggers, both at Murgon. Barambah Shed Men Meeting - Wondai
The Barambah Shed Men will be holding their 27th meeting at Wondai Airport off the Wondai-Proston Road about 10km north of Wondai from 4:30pm onwards this afternoon, when a limited number of joy flights will be available. The main meeting and BBQ will start at 6:00pm, and it will feature two great guest speakers to kick off the Barambah Shed Men's 2015 meetings: Allan Mollenhauer. who has built his own plane; and Geoff Dymock, who played cricket for Australia in 21 tests from 1974 to 1982 and once dismissed all 11 opposition batsmen in a single innings. Geoff also played 15 ODI’s and represented Queensland, and these days travels widely to coach and promote the game. The Nanango Race Club will be holding a special New Years Race Meeting at the Lee Park Raceway off the D'aguilar Highway just south of Nanango from 12:30pm to around 5:00pm this afternoon. Today's meeting is a replacement for the club's December 6 Christmas meeting which was rained out at the last minute, and will be first South Burnett race meeting for 2015. Everyone is encouraged to dress up in their best and most colourful holiday outfits to be in the running for some great Moffatdale Ridge Fashions Of The Field prizes. Tonight's racing will kick off with Hotlaps at 5:00pm (with 5 cars on the track at once) followed by Qualifiers at 6:15pm for the survivors. After this, there'll be Modified Productions (night 1 of 3); the first round of the South Burnett Junior Nationals (for Juniors - finals tomorrow night); and Microsprints. Tickets for tonight's races are $25 for adults, $15 for students/pensioners or $65 for families of four (under 12s are free) or you can buy a 3-day super pass for the whole weekend: $60 for adults, $40 for students/pensioners or $150 for a family. This fun event is for teams of four players, who take to the green with two bowls each and try to get their two bowls as close to the kitty as possible. At the end of each round, the bowl furthest from the kitty is removed from play, and this elimination process continues until there’s only one bowler left (who is “The Last Man Standing”). Tickets for tonight are $25 for adults, $15 for students/pensioners or $65 for families of four (under 12s are free) or you can buy a 3-day super pass for the whole weekend: $60 for adults, $40 for students/pensioners or $150 for a family. Australia Day Celebrations At Kingaroy
Kingaroy Australia's Day celebrations will be held at the Town Hall Forecourt in Glendon Street this morning, kicking off with a free community breakfast at 6:45am. This will be followed from 7:00am onwards with a range of family fun activities including face painting and a jumping castle for children; bush poetry; live music from the talented Matt Phillips; and a whip-cracking display by Paul Simms. At 9:00am, the official flag-raising ceremony will be performed by the Australian Army Cadet Unit and Light Horse Brigade, and this will be followed by recognition of Australia Day Award winners from the Kingaroy area and an address by special guest speaker Fr Nigel Sequeira. A vocal quartet will perform during the ceremony, and this will be followed by the famous pie-eating competition for adults and lamington-eating contest for children. The Murgon Bowls Club in Macalister Street, Murgon will be holding a "Last Man Standing" knockout bowls competition at 5:30pm this evening. This fun event is for teams of four players, who take to the green with two bowls each and try to get their two bowls as close to the kitty as possible. At the end of each round, the bowl furthest from the kitty is removed from play, and this elimination process continues until there’s only one bowler left (who is “The Last Man Standing”). Queensland State Election
The Queensland State elections are being held today and all enrolled voters in the South Burnett are required to cast a vote for their chosen candidate in either the Nanango or Callide electorates (depending on where they live). Polling booths will be open in their usual locations all around the region from 8:00am to 6:00pm and some mobile polling booths will also be in operation. In Nanango, voters can get to choose between the LNP's sitting member Deb Frecklington, the ALP's Liz Hollens-Riley, PUP candidate Jason Ford, Greens candidate Grant Newson, KAP's Ray Hopper or Independent Dean Love. And in Callide, the choice will be between the LNP's sitting member Jeff Seeney, the ALP's Graeme Martin, PUP's John Bjelke-Petersen, the Greens' Erich Schulz or Independents Michael Higginson, Duncan Scott or Steve Ensby. And in the twelfth round of this year's B Grade competition, RSL Services will play the Murgon Colts in Kingaroy; the Murgon Diggers will play Warriors at Murgon; and the mighty Kumbia Rattlers will play Barambah at Kumbia.
