Good Friday Public Holiday
Today is Good Friday, a public holiday. Most South Burnett business will either be closed today or operating on restricted hours. Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday are also public holidays. If you're planning to attend something today, it would be wise to phone beforehand to check they're not taking an Easter break. Today also marks the start of the Easter school vacation for all State schools. Speed limits around schools will rise by 10kph today and stay that way until classes return for Term 2 on Tuesday, April 17.
Maidenwell Running Festival
The first day of the 4th annual Maidenwell Running Festival (formerly known as the Maidenwell Marathon) will be held at Maidenwell today. As the name suggests, the Marathon is for runners and walkers and there will be 9 events over three days, ranging from 2.2km to a 56km ultra-marathon. Whatever your fitness or competitive level - and no matter whether you're walking or running - the festival has a distance to suit everyone. Today the Festival will kick off at the Maidenwell Sports Grounds at 1:00pm, where runners will have the choice of a 14km, 28km or 42km full marathon course. And tonight, volunteers will be preparing a Good Friday fish and salad meal in the Maidenwell Hotel's dining room for participants and guests ($15 per head). Free camping is available at the Sports Grounds if you'd like to stay the full weekend. You can read more about the Maidenwell Running Festival on the Festival's website, or phone Bronwyn on 0439-842-412. You can also read more about what the 2016 Marathon was like on our website.
Good Friday Country Gospel Concert - Kingaroy
The Kingaroy District Ministers Association will be holding a free Good Friday Country Gospel Concert at the Kingaroy Town Hall forecourt in Glendon Street at 6:00pm this evening. The concert will feature the Walmsley Brothers, who were the stand-out main act at a similar concert last year, along with special guest The Ringer and local country music artists as well. There'll also be a Men's Shed barbecue running if you get peckish. You should BYO chairs or a blanket, but everyone is welcome and admission is free.
Yarraman Walk Of Faith
The annual inter-denominational "Yarraman Walk Of Faith" will be held in Yarraman today, commencing with a brief service at 10:00am at the Uniting Church in Douglas Street. After this, marchers will proceed to the rest of Yarraman's churches (ie Our Lady Of Dolours Catholic church, St Phillips' Anglican Church and the Lutheran Church) before concluding with tea, coffee and hot cross buns. This Good Friday walk - which has been running in Yarraman for decades - embraces all the town's churches, and everyone is welcome to attend this community celebration of Easter. An offering plate will be in place if you'd like to make a donation towards expenses, and transport will be available for those who are unable to undertake the walks between churches.
