Anzac Day

Today is Anzac Day, a national public holiday when the nation pauses to remember the sacrifices of thousands of Australians who have fought for the democratic principles our country is committed to in conflicts all over the world. Most South Burnett businesses will either be closed completely today or operating on restricted hours (ie from noon onwards) as a mark of respect. Anzac Day commemorative services will be held throughout the region from 4:27am onwards: the same time the original Anzacs began their assault on the beaches of Gallipoli 104 years ago. Here's where they'll be held:

Wondai Anzac Day Race Meeting
The South Burnett Race Club will be holding their 46th Anzac Day Race Meeting at the Wondai race track in Baynes Street today in aid of Legacy, and after a sombre morning of reflection it's always one of our region's most popular race meetings of the year. Today's trackside action will feature an on-course TAB; live telecasts of interstate races and interstate betting fluctuations; a vigorous undercover betting ring; a great BBQ and bar; the Lady Luck Cocktail Bar; a "Poppies and Lace" fashion theme; and a card of five races. Gates will open at 11:30am; the bar will open at 1:00pm; and the first race will leave the barriers at around 2:05pm. Everyone is welcome and admission is just $10. Reserved seating is also available for a small extra charge. You can read more about what last year's Anzac Day race meeting was like (and see pictures) on our website.
Spirit Of The Bush Balladeers Muster - Boondooma
The second day of the five-day Spirit Of The Bush Balladeers & Heritage Muster will be held at Boondooma Homestead at 8262 Durong-Mundubbera Road, Boondooma today. This popular annual campout week features lots of Australia's top bush balladeers and poets (more than 25 will be appearing at the Muster this year) along with walk-up artists. The Muster routinely attracts 700 to 800 caravanners plus day-trippers, and in addition to bucketloads of non-stop music there'll also be great camp oven meals, a licensed bar, BBQ, stalls, and displays of vintage cars and engines, photography and historical items. Today's activities will begin with a Bush Poet's Breakfast at 7:30am, followed by invited artists and walk-up performers well into the evening. There'll also be an Anzac Day Service held in the grounds at 9:00am this morning. Admission to today's Muster is $15 or you can buy a 5-day pass for $105. Bush camping is also available on-site and can be booked by phoning the Homestead's caretakers on (07) 4168-0159. You can also get a program of this year's Muster in PDF format by clicking here.
