Good Friday
Today is Good Friday, a public holiday. Most South Burnett business will either be closed today or operating on restricted hours. Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday are also public holidays. If you're planning to attend something today, it would be wise to phone beforehand to check they're not taking an Easter break. And if you need to do some grocery shopping at a supermarket, your only choices are Kingaroy's Super IGA (7:00am to 9:00pm), Yarraman IGA (6:00am to 8:00pm) and Goomeri Foodworks (8:00am to 4:00pm). Finally, licenced premises are permitted to sell and supply liquor from 10:00am to 12:00pm in conjunction with a meal today if they elect to open, but takeaway sales are not permitted.
Maidenwell Running Festival
The first day of the 5th annual Maidenwell Running Festival (formerly known as the Maidenwell Marathon) will be held at the Maidenwell Sportsgrounds next to the Maidenwell Hotel today. As the name suggests, the Marathon is for runners and walkers and this year there will be 12 events over three days, ranging from 400m foot races to a 56km ultra-marathon. Whatever your fitness or competitive level - and no matter whether you're walking or running - the festival has a distance to suit everyone. Today the Festival will kick off at 12:00 noon, where runners will have the choice of a 14km, 28km or 42km full marathon course. And tonight, volunteers will be preparing a Good Friday pasta meal with a vegetarian option for participants and guests ($15 per head). Free camping is available at the Sports Grounds if you'd like to stay the full weekend. You can read more about the Maidenwell Running Festival on the Festival's website, or phone Bronwyn on 0439-842-412. You can also read more about what last year's Running Festival was like on our website.
Yarraman Walk Of Faith
The annual inter-denominational "Yarraman Walk Of Faith" will be held in Yarraman today, commencing with a brief service at 10:00am at the Calvary Lutheran Church at 14 McDaniell Street, Yarraman. After this, marchers will proceed to the rest of Yarraman's churches (ie Our Lady Of Dolours Catholic church, St Philips' Anglican Church and the Uniting Church) before concluding with tea, coffee and hot cross buns. This Good Friday walk - which has been running in Yarraman for decades - embraces all the town's churches, and everyone is welcome to attend this community celebration of Easter. An offering plate will be in place if you'd like to make a donation towards expenses, and transport will be available for those who are unable to undertake the walks between churches.
