Mothers Day
Today is the second Sunday in May: Mothers Day. Different countries around the world celebrate Mother's Day on different days of the year because the event has many different origins. Some say that Mothers Day first began in ancient Greece and emerged from a cult which was marked by the festival of Cybele (the mother of the gods) which was celebrated around Greece and the Greek colonies of Asia Minor, and then later in Rome. In more modern times, Mother's Day began in the USA when it was copied from England by social activist Julia Ward Howe after the American Civil War as a call to unite women against war. But in the UK and Australia, the day simply celebrates motherhood and thanking mothers. And if you'd like to give your own Mum a big "Thank You!" today, here's how you can do it in the South Burnett:

After this, runners can set off on either a 4km or 8km run along the South Burnett Rail Trail, and walkers can undertake a 4km walk. The Wondai Lions will be on site to serve up breakfasts, and there'll also be a multi-draw raffle. All participants are encouraged to wear pink and a fun morning out is guaranteed. Entry fees are $25 for adults and $15 for children or concession card holders, and there are also tickets for families too. The Classic usually draws up to 300 participants every year, and you can read more about it and see photos of previous Classics on our website.
