Reserve Forces Day - Wondai
Today is Reserve Forces Day, which commemorates the two million-plus Australian men and women who've served in the ranks of the Army, Navy and Air Force Reserve since 1948, as well as the many thousands who served in the militia and other volunteer formations in the years prior to that. Wondai will be marking the event with a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph outside the former Wondai Shire Council chambers in Mackenzie Street at 10:00am, and then a parade which will march along Pring and Bramston Streets into Mackenzie Street, and then to Coronation Park at 11:00am. The Parade is open to anyone who served in the CMF or in the reserves of any of the three Service Arms at any time, as well as any Regulars or Nasho’s (naturally, spectators are encouraged to come along and wave the flag to show their support). After this there will be a Recognition Service in Coronation Park, before the event concludes with a Beating Retreat ceremony held on the roadway fronting the Cenotaph. Everyone will then be invited to the nearby Wondai Diggers Club for refreshments. Note: Wondai is the smallest centre in Australia to hold a Reserve Forces Day parade, but it's always well supported. You can also read more about what last year's Reserve Forces Day in Wondai was like on our website.
Raising Hell In Maidenwell
The third (and final) day of the three-day Raising Hell In Maidenwell Car Show 'N' Shine camp out weekend will be held at the Maidenwell Sportsgrounds (right next to the Maidenwell Hotel) today. This popular event - which is run by the South Burnett Gas Guzzlers to support local charities - features live music; a big Show'n'Shine focussing on hot rods, street machines and pre-1975 customs; and vintage and veteran caravans. Today's activities will largely focus on breaking up camp - the main public day was yesterday - but there'll be some entertainment at the hotel and in the grounds, as well as lots of great cars to inspect, before things wrap up around lunchtime. Everyone is welcome! For more information, contact Wayne or Veronica on (07) 4162-4784 or Terry on 0409-496-167 or email them.
Maidenwell Markets
If you're heading up to the Bunya Mountains today, go via Maidenwell and you can browse the Maidenwell Markets at the Maidenwell Sportsgrounds (just next to the Rural Fire Brigade HQ in the heart of town) between 8:00am and 12:00 noon this morning. These markets offer a range of arts and crafts, local produce, plants, home baking, bric-a-brac, sauces, jams, chutneys, coffee, food and lots more (there's even a jumping castle for children). Stallholder fees are very modest and all proceeds go to the Maidenwell Community Group for the development of the township. Everyone is welcome! More details? Phone Robyn on 0423-032-080.
