2016 Kilkivan Great Horse Ride
The 2016 Kilkivan Great Horse Ride will be held in and around Kilkivan today. The Great Horse Ride is one of the few genuine spectacles of south-east Queensland, with more than 800 riders expected to spend the day riding trails in and around the district before assembling at 4:00pm in the afternoon for the breath-taking Grand Parade along Bligh Street (Kilkivan's main street). But you don't have to be a rider to enjoy the day! From 11:00am onwards there'll be a market and food fest operating in Bligh Street, along with a wide array of entertainment ranging from whip-cracking to black powder gun demos, line dancing, a petting zoo, live music and pony rides. And after the Grand Parade concludes, the action will swap to the nearby Kilkivan Showgrounds for the free Tom Grady Campfire Concert featuring Muddy Flats, which will kick off at 6:00pm and run until late tonight. There'll also be a canteen and a licensed bar operating in the grounds, along with $5 camp sites if you want to stay over. You can obtain complete details about the 2016 Great Horse Ride (including the rules, the details of the trails and contact information if you'd like to take a ride yourself) on the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride web site.
Kingaroy Junior Motorcycle Club Race Day
The Kingaroy Junior Motorcycle Speedway Club will be holding their second Race Day for 2016 in the Kingaroy McDonalds Race Series today. Racing will be in Peewee, 125cc and 250cc classes at the club's track inside main ring at the Kingaroy Showgrounds (entry is via Avoca Street). Gates will open at 12:00 noon and racing will commence at 2:00pm. The club is for young riders aged 4 to 16 and spectators are very welcome. More details? Phone Simon on 0467-181-762. You can also read more about the club on our website.
The Kennel Jam Session - Hivesville
The Hivesville Hotel will be holding its first Saturday of the month Kennel Jam Session from 5:00pm until late this evening. This monthly get-together is for musicians of all ages and all genres, as well as fans of live music. All background gear is provided - just bring you instrument, voice and music - and everyone is welcome! More details? Phone the hotel on (07) 4168-9876.
Nanango Country Markets
The Nanango Show Society will be holding their regular monthly Country Markets at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 6:00am to around 12:00 noon today. As usual, the markets will feature a wide variety of craft stalls, new and used goods, plants, poultry and pets. The Nanango Markets are the largest rural market in south east Queensland and routinely attract 320 to 420 stallholders. But new stallholders are always very welcome too! More info? Saturday Bowls - Yarraman
The Yarraman Bowls Club in Margaret Street, Yarraman will be hosting 3 Bowls Triples matches today for self-selected teams. Names need to be in by noon, and games will start at 12:30pm. More details from the club: (07) 4163-8269.
Saturday Rugby League - Nanango
Rugby League will resume this weekend, though things are still in the preliminary stages (the first official round of this year's competition starts next Saturday, April 9). And after the Mustangs moved their match with the Hornets to Friday night (ie last night), there'll only be one A-grade match played today: a clash between the Nanango Stags and Kingaroy Red Ants, which will be played at Fred Kassulke Oval just south of Nanango's CBD. The Stags' 2016 side looked very impressive when they played a pre-season match against the Hornets a few weeks ago, and the Red Ants are also looking pretty strong. So it should be a great game to see, and a bar and canteen will be operating too. Naturally, spectators are very welcome and the game will get underway around 5:00pm. Note: southburnett.com.au had earlier listed this match's starting time as 3:00pm. This was an error, and we sincerely apologise to any readers who were inconvenienced by this.
Fire Twirling Workshop - Kingaroy
If you've ever wanted to learn how to twirl fire - and haven't we all? - a Fire Twirling Workshop will be held in Kingaroy at 4:30pm this afternoon. For $40 per person you can learn the art of fire twirling from Tranquil Flames. More details? Phone (07) 4162-5398.

Today's meeting will feature Production Sedans, Junior Sedans, Mod Lites and Street Stocks, and there'll be a number of top drivers competing for glory in all four classes of racing. The main gate will open at 2:00pm and the first pedals will hit the metal at 4:30pm. Admission is $25 for adults and $15 for concessions. Under 12s are free, and a canteen will be operating on site.
