International Talk Like A Pirate Day
Avast, seadogs! Today is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, a holiday created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy) of Albany in Oregon USA, who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.
If you want to take part, you can greet people with "Ahoy, matey!" instead of "Hi!". And if you often pause when you talk, consider changing your pauses to "Arrrrs" instead of "Errrrs" to keep in tune with the day's spirit. If you have a "dress down Friday" at your workplace, today is also a really good day to dress down (right down) with pirate gear. And it's one of the only times of the year when it's socially acceptable to call someone a "scurvy dog" or a suggest they "swab out the scuppers", or perhaps hold a pirate party where you make your guests walk the plank.
Greet, Meet & Eat - Yarraman
- A "Greet, Meet & Eat" social function will be held at St Phillips Anglican Church Hall in Millar Street, Yarraman from 10:00am until around 1:00pm today. The group was formed in May 2012 to provide a safe place where locals from Yaraman, Blackbutt and Cooyar could get together, enjoy each other's company and meet others in a low-cost way, and it's met on the third Friday of each month ever since (except for December and January). Today's meeting will kick off at 10:00am with a cuppa and will be followed by a three-course lunch at 12:00 noon. A Jackpot Karaoke Night with Love2Sing will be held at the Warana Hotel at 42 Mackenzie Street in Wondai from 7:30pm until late this evening. The South Burnett Darts Association will be holding their regular weekly Social Competition Night from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at their premises at Shed 1, 18 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. This is a 3-a-side event with a $5 playing fee, and a fully licensed bar will be operating along with raffles. South Burnett Pantry - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Pantry will be open from 11:00am to 1:00pm today at 22 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $35 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items).
