Vietnam Veterans Day
Today is Vietnam Veterans Day, which is also known as Long Tan Day in memory of the 18 Australians killed at the battle of Long Tan on August 18, 1966. Vietnam Veterans Day has come to symbolise our nation's collective memory of the Vietnam War and in the South Burnett, special services are conducted every year to mark it. In Blackbutt, Blackbutt RSL will be holding a wreath-laying service at the corner of Muir and Douglas streets at 11:00am this morning. Dress is smart casual with full decorations and medals, and the service will be followed by light refreshments back at the RSL. In Nanango, a service will be held at the Cenotaph at 11:00am this morning, followed by light refreshments at the nearby RSL. In Kingaroy, Vietnam Veterans Day commemorations will be held in front of the RSL's flagpoles in Markwell Street from 10:30am, followed with light refreshments in the RSL; in Wondai, a service will be held at the War Memorial in front of Wondai Town Hall in Mackenzie Street, beginning at 11:00am; and in Murgon, a service will be held at Murgon's War Memorial at the corner of Lamb and Gore streets at 10:00am. In light of Australia's recent withdrawal from Afghanistan after almost two decades of involvement, Afghanistan veterans (as well as Vietnam veterans) are particularly encouraged to attend any of these services. You can also find out more about the Vietnam Veterans Association - which looks after the needs of Vietnam vets and helps promote VV Day - on their web site.
Scots In The Bush - Boondooma
The first day of this year's four-day Scots In The Bush Scottish and Celtic Festival will be held at Boondooma Homestead at 8262 Mundubbera-Durong Road at Boondooma today. The Festival - the largest of its kind in Queensland - features Scottish pipe bands and dancers, folk singers and poets as well as Scottish food, games and much more! Special guests this year include Darrel Craft, David Rowen, Tom Kimmet, Vince Pagett, Mouldy Haggis, Celtic Thunder Oz, the Ishka Ceilidh Band, the Rum City Highland Dancers, the Moreton Celtic Fiddle Club, the Noosa & District Pipe Band, Celtic Psychosis, the Toowoomba Caledonian Pipe Band, Murrumba Pipes and Drums and more. A licensed bar will be running throughout the event and meals will be available too, as well as on-site camping, Highland games, a Blessing Of The Haggis and a big Celtic market. Tickets for the full four days are $95 per head for adults (which includes a bush camping site) but you can just buy a day ticket for $10 to $20 if you prefer (children under 15 are free). Today the Festival will largely be about setting things up, with walk-up acts in the morning and professional bands tonight. More details? Phone Judy on 0427-364-026.
