Vietnam Veterans Day - Blackbutt, Nanango and Kingaroy
Today is Vietnam Veterans Day, which was formerly known as Long Tan Day in memory of the 18 Australians killed at the battle of Long Tan on the 18th August 1966, when troops from 6th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment engaged a large enemy force there. Vietnam Veterans Day has come to symbolise our nation's collective memory of the Vietnam War and in the South Burnett, special services are conducted every year to mark it. In Blackbutt, the president and members of the Blackbutt RSL Sub-Branch will be holding a service to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan at the RSL Memorial in Muir Street at 11:00am sharp; in Nanango, the Nanango RSL will be holding a commemoration service at the Drayton Street War Memorial at 4:30pm; and in Kingaroy, the South Burnett branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association will be holding a commemoration service outside the Kingaroy RSL at 10:30am. All members of the public are most welcome to attend any of these events (BYO chair). You can also find out more about the Vietnam Veterans Association - which looks after the needs of Vietnam vets and helps promote VV Day - on their web site.
