Kingaroy Friendship Markets
The third Saturday of the month Friendship Markets will be held at Kingaroy Showgrounds in Youngman Street, Kingaroy from 7:00am to around 12:00pm today. The markets are run by the Kingaroy Show Society and feature a great range of arts, crafts, food stalls, fruit and garden stalls, plus unusual bric-a-brac. New stallholders are always very welcome! Yarraman Men's Shed
The Yarraman Men's Shed at the end of Mill Street, Yarraman will be holding one of its regular get-togethers today. The Men's Shed is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and new members are always welcome. More details? Send them an email
Yarraman Markets
The Yarraman Progress Association's Yarraman Markets will be held on the vacant block at the corner of the D'Aguilar and New England Highways (ie opposite Bendigo Bank) in Yarraman from 8:00am until around 1:00pm today. The markets feature trash and treasure stalls, car boot sellers, local produce and hand-made goods, as well as food stalls, and are held weekly. Everyone is welcome and if you'd like to book a stall yourself - it's only $5! - call Joe on (0459) 638-282. Note: All patrons and stallholders are asked to observe proper social distancing to stay safe.
Moore Hall Markets
The monthly Moore Hall Markets will be held in the grounds surrounding the Soldiers Hall just off the D'Aguilar Highway in Moore's CBD from 6:30am to around noon this morning. The markets are held on the third Saturday of each month and new stallholders are always welcome.
Crochet Workshop - Kingaroy
The Kingaroy Regional Art Gallery's Winter Craft Festival will be running throughout June and July, and today craftsperson Noeleen will be demonstrating the art of crochet from 9:00am to 1:00pm to complement the two-month show. The Gallery is located in Haly Street, Kingaroy (opposite the peanut silos) and there's no fee to view this year's Winter Craft Exhibition or Fran's paper making demonstration.
Railway Parkrun - Proston
The Proston parkrun group will be holding its weekly 5km timed walk/run at Railway Park in Rodney Street, Proston at 7:00am this morning. Runners follow a course along the former railway line and the parkrun group is free to join. All you need to do is register (once) online at parkrun.com.au and bring the printed barcode to any parkrun event.
Seafood Night - Wondai
Dimities Cottage at 49 Haly Street in Wondai will be holding another of their popular monthly all-you-can-eat Seafood Nights from 6:00pm this evening (dinner starts at 6:30pm). The buffet features all your favourite hot and cold seafoods fresh from the trawlers, as well as non-seafood dishes, desserts, tea and coffee. Proston Men's Shed
The Proston Men's Shed will be meeting at their workshop buildings at Railway Park in Rodney Street, Proston for their regular Saturday morning get-together today, kicking off with a cuppa at 8:00am and continuing on until noon. Theatre Workshop - Blackbutt
A Theatre Workshop for adults aged 18 or over will be held at the Blackbutt Memorial Hall in Bowman Road, Blackbutt from 9:00am to 2:00pm today. There'll be one local football match played in the region today, when Kingaroy Islanders take on Kingaroy Easts at Tom Alford Oval at the end of Oliver Bond Street, Kingaroy at 6:30pm this evening. A canteen will be operating in the grounds and spectators are very welcome!
Callide By-Election
A by-election for the State seat of Callide will be held today to refill the position formerly occupied by Colin Boyce, who moved from State to Federal politics at the recent Federal election. Voters can get to choose amongst six candidates representing the LNP, ALP, KAP, Pauline Hanson's One Nation, the Animal Justice Party and the Legalise Cannabis Qld Party, and voting booths will be open in all the usual places. While Callide has very little impact on most of the South Burnett (which is covered by the Nanango electorate under MP Deb Frecklington), Bunya Mountains residents will probably need to travel to Bell State School to cast their vote, and Cooranga and Darr Creek residents will need to go to Jandowae's Memorial Hall. Results of the by-electiuon are expected to be knoiwn next week.
Local Stories - Kingaroy
Kingaroy Library in Glendon Street, Kingaroy will be launching the first in a series of "Local Stories" at 10:00am this morning by inviting genealogical researcher Mike England (pictured) - a member and past vice-president of the Bunya Mountains Natural History Association, former school teacher, and paramedic - to discuss the tools and techniques he used to research the history of a pioneering couple buried in the Bunya Mountains. Mike will share his research methods including consulting the registers of births, deaths and marriages, various census records and cemetery records as he tracked down the real story of Maria Gertrude and Joseph Sutherland Carbines and in doing so, laid some myths about them to rest. The workshop is free and everyone is welcome!
South Burnett Saints Heritage Day - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Saints will be celebrating their annual Heritage Day at Lyle Vidler Oval in Youngman Street, Kingaroy today with an all-day party along with two AFL matches: Saints women vs Toowoomba Tigers at 12:30pm, and the Saints men's side vs Toowoomba Tigers at 2:30pm. The event is open to past and present South Burnett Australian Rules players (ie Bulldogs, Jets and Saints), committee members, volunteers and supporters who are all invited to join in a day that will offer (amongst other things) the announcement of the Team Of The Decade; auctions; raffles; live entertainment by South Burnett's favourite party band Mr Q; and from noon onwards, all you can eat food and drinks for just $20 (until stocks run out, anyway). Everyone is welcome!
Saturday Rugby League - Murgon
The South Burnett's rugby league competition will be run in the north today, with all games played at the Murgon Sportsgrounds in Macalister Street, Murgon. The day's action will kick off at 8:45am with junior matches, and these will run until 1:45pm when there'll be an U14s clash between Murgon and Nanango. After this, the first of the day's two A-grade games will kick off at 2:40pm when the Murgon Mustangs play Cherbourg's Hornets, followed by a second A-grade game between Kingaroy's Red Ants and Nanango's Stags at 4:15pm. A canteen and (when the kids leave) a bar will be operating in the grounds, and admission is just $2 if you get through the gates by 1:30pm but it's $5 if you get there later. Everyone is welcome!
