Wondai Autumn Garden Expo
The first day of the weekend long Wondai Autumn Garden Expo will be held at the Wondai Sports Grounds off the Bunya Highway just north of Wondai's CBD from 8:00am this morning through until 4:30pm this afternoon. The Expo is one of the South Burnett's signature annual events as well as one of the largest gardening shows of its type in south-east Queensland, and it always draws thousands of keen gardeners to Wondai every April. This year (for the seventh year running) it's being held in conjunction with the South Burnett Orchid Society's Annual Show, which will be staged at the nearby Wondai Diggers Club in Mackenzie Street, Wondai; and the Wondai Art Gallery are also running a special exhibition on a floral theme too - so make sure you check out all three venues! As well as the usual huge range of plant and garden-related product displays, the Expo will also feature a number of interesting and well-informed guest speakers talking on a variety of gardening topics throughout the day. Guests can also get to enjoy a brilliant Flower Show and live musical entertainment, as well as the Official Opening at 11:00am. There'll also be plenty of food and drink outlets dotted around the grounds too. Admission is a slim $5 per day (young people under 15 can get in for free) and you can get more details and/or book a stand of your own on the Garden Expo's website or by phoning Helen on (07) 4168-9297.

This fully licensed affair offers live music (this year, with popular Toowoomba rock & roll band The Countdowns) and a great roast dinner, dessert and supper. The Ball will also see the judging of Kingaroy's Miss Showgirl and Rural Ambassador for 2016. Tickets to the Kingaroy Show Cabaret Ball are $25 per adult (or $50 with a meal); $15 for age pensioners (or $40 with a meal); and children under 12 are admitted free, but can get a meal for $10. Tickets can be obtained in advance from 4SB/1071am at the corner of Alford and Glendon Streets in Kingaroy; Coppards Menswear in Kingaroy Street; and Raine and Horne's offices in Haly Street or by contacting Ros Tigel by email or txt /leave message on 0428-228-839. Tickets at the door on the night will be $30 for adults and $25 for students / age pensioners. No meal tickets will be available at the door. Pursers Coaches will also be running a bus from Goomeri, Murgon and Wondai to Kingaroy for $20 per person on Cabaret night. Seats need to be booked in advance from 4SB/1071am, Coppards Menswear, Raine and Horne Kingaroy or by contacting Ros Tigell. NB. Pursers will not be taking bookings. A $10 fee applies for car sites and $20 fee for swap sites, and entry is $5 for everyone else (but under-12s can get for free). Everyone is welcome! More details? Saturday Soccer - Kingaroy and Wondai
The fifth round of 2016's South Burnett Football League competition will be played at Kingaroy and Wondai today. In Kingaroy, Wests Women's Division will play Nanango's Women's Division at Tom Alford Oval at the end of Oliver Bond Street at 3:30pm today (the 1st and 2nd Division men's teams will play their matches tomorrow, because a lot of Nanango's players are helping out at today's Nanango Show). And in Wondai, Barambah will contest Gunners at the Wondai Soccer Fields at the northern end of the Wondai Sportsgrounds on the Bunya Highway, with 2nd Division kicking off at 12:30pm, Women's Division at 2:00pm and 1st Division at 3:15pm. Spectators and supporters are very welcome! Note: The second week of the region's junior soccer competition will also be played this morning at Wondai, before the senior competition takes to the park.
Saturday AFL - Kingaroy
The Darling Downs 2016 AFL Competition will kick off at Lyle Vidler Oval in Youngman Street, Kingaroy (just next to Beangrowers) at 2:50pm this afternoon when the South Burnett Saints' men's team do battle with the Highfield Lions in the first round of this year's slimmed down season. Instead of the A and B grade divisions that played last year, this year will only have a single division, which means the Saints will be moving up a little bit and some of the sides they'll be playing against a little down. All the same, if you love AFL it's been a long time between drinks and Kingaroy will be the best place to slake your thirst this weekend. Note: The Women's team will be having a bye this week - and next week both the Saints' teams will be playing the Swans in Dalby.
Saturday Junior Rugby League - Nanango and Murgon
The South Burnett's senior players are all playing away this weekend to get a side selected for the 47th Battalion competition. But junior games will be played at Nanango and Murgon. In Nanango at Fred Kassulke Oval, U6s and U8s Stags will play the Cherbourg Hornets at 9:00am, followed by the U10s teams at 10:00am, then the U12s at 11:00am. At noon, for a change of pace, the U14s Stags will play the Wondai Wolves, before things wrap up with an U16s clash between the Stags and Hornets at 1:00pm. And in Murgon at the Murgon Showgrounds, the U6s and U8s Mustangs will play the Wolves at 9:00am, followed by the U10s at 10:00am and 11:00am, then the U12s at noon. But at 1:00pm, the U18s Blues will take the field for what may be the top league game of the weekend. A canteen will be operating at both venues and everyone is welcome.
